John Diehl to Receive 2019 Minnesota ICON Award
Finance & Commerce and Minnesota Lawyer have announced that John Diehl has been selected to receive a 2019 Minnesota ICON award. The magazines are paying tribute to “titans of the boardroom and the courtroom” with their second annual awards event in December. The Minnesota ICON awards recognize individuals with proven success throughout a lengthy and accomplished career. The honorees are leaders in their field who have been active in their communities and in mentoring the next generation.
John has had a long and distinguished career as a leader in the health care community. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Minnesota State Bar Health Law Section for his significant contributions to the practice area during his career. He developed the laws to authorize and regulate health maintenance organizations, thus establishing the format for a structured, vertically integrated healthcare system—the predicate for our current system and the future of healthcare delivery. Perhaps even more significantly, in 1975 he introduced the “assigned risk pool” concept that made affordable individual health insurance available to persons with preexisting conditions.
For decades, John has served the community in many other ways as well. These include key leadership positions with the American Cancer Society, Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare and the Gillette Children’s Hospital Foundation, Model Cities Health Center and Model Cities of St. Paul, and other arts, environmental protection, civic, professional, educational and political organizations.
We look forward to celebrating this great honor with John in December.
