Larkin Hoffman Sponsors Bisnow Power Women Event

On Thursday, October 28, 2021, Bisnow held its annual Twin Cities Power Women event Carry as You Climb: The Collective Movement to Empower Gender Equitable Leadership which was proudly sponsored by Larkin Hoffman to celebrate the success of women in the commercial real estate and construction industries.

The event opened with a warm welcome by emcee Phyllis Karasov, an employment attorney from Larkin Hoffman.  Phyllis outlined the day’s events and then turned to Inga Kingland, a real estate and construction attorney from Larkin Hoffman, to moderate the first panel the Past, Present & Future of Women in Commercial Real Estate. Inga was joined by panelists Christy Lewis, President, MNCREW; Board of Directors, EDAM, Vice President, Mint Roofing and Heather Weerheim, President-Elect MNCREW, Director, Greiner Construction, in a discussion about how they came into the real estate and construction industry, an area largely dominated by men, what motivated them to continue and why they feel the future is bright for women in the industry.

The first panel was followed by keynote speaker Andrea Jenkins, Vice President, Minneapolis City Council who started out her presentation with a poem and went on to discuss the difficulties our community has faced over the past 18 months.  Andrea then went on to emphasize the necessity for people to be true to themselves and respectful of others.

Following the keynote speaker, a second panel titled Empowered Women, Empower Women was moderated by Tamara O’Neill Moreland, Shareholder at Larkin Hoffman.  Tamara was joined by panelists Carrie Eggleston, Development Manager, United Properties, Erika Miller, SVP, KimbleCo, and Mary Jo Kelly, VP, Kraus-Anderson Financial Services Group.  The panel discussed how developing a support network of both men and women helps to empower women.  The panelists said that they have joined organizations, attended lunches and generally have worked to provide support to one another.  Outlining that invitations to sit on a board or join a leadership council can make a big difference to a woman’s career. The conversation then turned to how we can help to level the opportunities provided to women and how empowering women really helps to provide an avenue that will promote equality.  Mentoring was highlighted as a very helpful avenue to provide feedback, opportunity and enable women to build their network.
