Larkin Hoffman attorneys were proud to represent the firm at the recent Law Day Dinner in support of Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid (MMLA). The event raised over $300,000 for MMLA’s work advocating for the legal rights of disadvantaged people to have safe, healthy, and independent lives in strong communities.

MMLA’s recent work includes representing a tenants union in a case regarding heating outages, advocating against “seclusion rooms” in Minnesota schools, and winning a settlement from a ridesharing service that discriminated against passengers with service animals.

Shareholder Erika Toftness is a board director at The Fund for Legal Aid, which hosts the annual dinner.

“We’re so pleased at the ongoing generosity and support of the legal community,” said Toftness. “The client stories that were shared at this event highlight how important MMLA’s work is, and how much legal representation can accomplish for those who could not access it without MMLA.”

Attendees heard from surprise guest Senator Amy Klobuchar, who spoke about the legal community’s role in the recent Operation Metro Surge, and the Twin Cities being honored with a Profile in Courage Award.

The evening’s keynote speaker, Neal Katyal, spoke about his experience arguing cases before the Supreme Court, and reminded guests of the similarities between his work and the work of legal aid organizations: “We stand between a vulnerable person and a system that would otherwise crush them,” said Katyal.
